Compassion as a discipline

Compassion gets talked about as a feeling. In this work, it is a practice. It is the decision to show up on the third week, the third month, and the third year of someone's recovery — not because we feel inspired, but because we said we would.

Hope works the same way. Hope is not the warm certainty that things will turn out fine. Hope is the discipline of doing the next right thing when the outcome is uncertain. It is making the phone call, holding the meeting, opening the door one more time.

What we have learned is that consistency is its own kind of love. People in recovery have usually been let down many times. The single most healing thing we can offer is the experience of being met, week after week, by people who do not flinch.

That is the discipline. Show up. Tell the truth. Come back tomorrow.
